Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are you ever going to expand the weight room?

We have moved the selectorized weights into the Aerobics Room as of February 2005. The decline of aerobics classes has dictated that we make better use of the floor space.  The free weights will remain in the current weight room. Aerobic, dance and martial arts classes will be using the gym and multi-purpose areas as needed.

  • Why don't Town taxpayers get a break in their membership / daily rates?

The center was built by the Town of Waynesville. Only Town residents pay taxes, which is budgeted through the general fund, for recreation.  Haywood County gives us $70,000 per year for recreation and that is one reason why we do not charge a surcharge for nonresidents to use the facility.  User fees must be charged to help defray operational costs.  Fees also serve an independent function to ration limited activities, aid in discipline and control, and promote respect for an activity or facility.  The center is, by design, a revenue-producing facility as the general fund is unable to meet the entire expense needs.  Revenue sources include; general fund, fees and charges, contracted programs, sponsorships, donations and endowments.  These revenue sources are used to assure the continuation of the public service, while keeping the various activity interests as affordable as possible.

Special Note: The center was built without a tax increase to town residents.
